No Struggle, No Progress
The Carver-McDonald Branch Library, located at 2941 Renwick St. in Monroe, LA, hosted a community program featuring a book talk and signing for author RaShad Bristo's new book, "Bitter or Better: Doing More with Less!" on Thursday, November 14, 2024. RaShad Bristo, a native and resident of Mansfield, LA, shared his inspirational journey. As a child, RaShad dreamed of becoming a police officer, a goal he pursued after earning a BA in Criminal Justice from Grambling State University.
Hired and deputized by the DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office, RaShad attended the police academy, enduring weeks of rigorous training. However, just days before graduation, he was denied certification due to having one arm-a clear act of discrimination that nearly shattered his dream. In that difficult moment, RaShad remembered his grandfather's wise words: "Son, your disability does not define you, your determination does." With renewed strength and faith, RaShad overcame the odds and became a certified Peace Officer. He is now the only person in Louisiana-and the first in the nation-with one arm to graduate from a police academy and serve in various law enforcement roles. In 2016, RaShad's groundbreaking achievements were recognized with the Louisiana Governor's Disability Achievement Award.
The event was hosted by Carver-McDonald Branch Manager Joyce Powell, and attendees were inspired by RaShad's story of resilience and determination. If you missed it, you missed a true treat.
