No Struggle, No Progress
The idea of a Booker T. Reunion had been discussed for quite some time, but it needed someone to take the initiative to make it a reality. When Anthony Jordan approached Quateadra Smith about organizing the event, the team eagerly agreed to move forward. The Bookertorian Reunion and Parade took place over the weekend of October 25-26, 2024. Saturday's festivities were held at Chennault Park, while the parade on Sunday began at Roy Shelling Elementary School and ended at Carroll High School in Monroe, LA.
For an event of this magnitude, funding was essential. The Bookertorians came through, generously donating money for food, a jumper for the kids, paper goods, and other necessities. The community's support was overwhelming, with plenty of food for everyone, allowing all attendees to enjoy a day of fellowship and fun.
Though the event was a Bookertorian reunion, everyone was welcomed to join the celebration. The Booker T. community is known for being family-oriented, always looking out for one another. The event was a huge success, and plans are already underway to make next year's reunion even bigger and better.
Looking ahead, the organizers aim to establish the reunion as a nonprofit organization, focused on giving back to the community. The vision includes offering scholarships to students at schools like Roy Neil Snelling, Carroll Junior High, and Carroll High School, as well as helping elders in the neighborhood. This assistance would include ensuring their homes are well-maintained, providing adequate heating and cooling during extreme weather, and organizing food drives during the holidays.
Special thanks are extended to those who played a key role in the event's success. Bartholomew Robinson, Anthony Reed, Travis Butler, Charles Mitchell, Edward Mitchell, Cledus Cloman, Terrell Jackson, Tommy Stewart, Jason Harris, Larry Doublin, and Derrick Winn are appreciated for cooking all the meat. Additionally, Khisha Harris, Fannie Mariland, Veronica Robinson, Wynona Harris, Charlotte Butler, Yushelia Reed, Tawanna Ellis, and Erica Harris contributed by cleaning and seasoning the meat, preparing sides, and helping to serve the hundreds in attendance.
Thanks are also extended to everyone who donated water, drinks, and juices. The Monroe Dispatch and Dr. Ice captured memorable moments, and DJ Scott Banks provided excellent entertainment. A special thank you goes to Orlando James for providing Bookertorian paraphernalia.
Until next year!
