No Struggle, No Progress

Mayor, Transit Union Impasse

Monroe Mayor Friday Ellis seems to be gaining a reputation as an official frequently absent from his duties. There has been talk around town of the mayor seemingly stepping back from his open door policy, which was intended to make him accessible to the public. At a recent city council meeting, one councilman noted that he has yet to secure an audience with the mayor. Citizens are beginning to wonder what happened to the mayor who once promised to listen to the people of "Oneroe."

Adding to this list of concerns are the employees of TranStep, formerly Monroe Transit, according to Amalgamated 1160 Vice President James Tatum. At the September 10, 2024, city council meeting, Tatum raised union concerns with Mayor Ellis, specifically regarding the treatment of newly hired employees by management. Tatum explained that these employees are not given any incentives to remain with the company due to alleged poor working conditions that drive them away. He also stated that employee morale is low, as General Manager Marc Keenan allegedly harasses and intimidates employees in the same manner as when he was in charge of First Transit.

Tatum further claimed that despite multiple attempts, the union has been unable to secure a meeting with Mayor Ellis to address workplace issues and clarify the city's relationship with TranStep, which has taken over First Transit with Keenan still in charge. According to Tatum, the damage caused by Keenan can only be resolved by Mayor Ellis-if he agrees to meet with the union. Tatum also mentioned that attempts to engage in any dialogue or meetings with Keenan have been unsuccessful, leaving uncertainty about the future of transit and its employees.

Tatum emphasized the need for the union to be more involved when new employees are hired, so they can understand the role of the union and how it can support them on the job. However, he stressed that nothing will change without a meeting with the mayor, which is detrimental not only to the employees he represents but also to the city.
