No Struggle, No Progress

Machine Gun Commotion

Disclaimer: All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Having a gun seems to be a way of life in America. Guns are more prevalent than ever before, as gun manufacturers continue to churn out more deadly weapons. This nation undoubtedly leads the world in the number of guns available to the public, so it is not surprising to see them everywhere. The presence of guns keeps the public vigilant, but it also makes it more difficult for law enforcement to do their job when they confront someone who is armed. On August 6, 2024, deputies with the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office (OPSO) were patrolling an area near Evers Dr. after being advised of an individual acting suspiciously. They were informed that the individual, dressed in black clothing, was armed with a firearm as he knocked on someone's door. According to deputies, the individual, later identified as 20-year-old Devin Hampton, walked behind a residence on Evers Dr., traveled through the property, and accessed a fence. Deputies caught up to Hampton and called out to him, announcing themselves as officers, which led Hampton to return to the fence and surrender. Deputies recovered a Glock .45 caliber handgun with an extended magazine. The gun was allegedly equipped with a switch that allowed the weapon to fire multiple rounds with a single trigger pull. After being read his rights, Hampton allegedly waived them, informing deputies that the weapon was his and that he was carrying it for his own protection. He stated that he didn't know anyone at the residence but used the property to access a hole in the fence. Hampton was arrested, taken into custody, and transported to Ouachita Correctional Center. He was charged with Possession of a Machine Gun and Criminal Trespassing.
