The Mt. Nebo Playground Committee is sponsoring the 100th Anniversary of the Mt. Nebo Rosenwald Elementary School and the 35th Anniversary of the Atkins Quarters/Prichard Addition Annual Family Day on August 2, and 3, 2024 in Monroe LA. Do you or did you live in the area? Did you attend the Mt Nebo Elementary School? If so, we want to see your face on those days. We are having a ‘Meet and Greet’ on Friday August 2nd at 4p.m. at the Emily P. Robinson Community Center. On Saturday at 2 p.m., our activities will include the unveiling of the Louisiana Historical Marker for the Mt Nebo Rosenwald Elementary School and celebrating both the 100th and 35th anniversaries with fun and food. Saturday’s activities will be held at the Mt Nebo Playground at the corner of Jackson St and Thomas Ave. Rosenwald Schools -Booker T. Washington of the Tuskegee Institute and Julius Rosenwald philanthropist and president of Sears Roebuck, built state of the art schools for African American children across the South. The effort has been called the most important initiative to advance Black education in the early20th century. Attending a Rosenwald School put a student at the vanguard of education for southern Black Children. The architecture of the schools was a tangible statement of the equality of all children and their programming made them a focal point of community identity and aspirations. By 1928, one third of the South’s rural Black school children and teachers were served by Rosenwald Schools. See you there!! Article adapted from African American Cultural Heritage Fund
