No Struggle, No Progress
Mother's Day is a day that holds special meaning for millions, as it is a day we honor the mothers who are no longer with us. Going to the graves of loved ones is a solemn occasion where we talk to our mothers as if they are still alive. It is the serene atmosphere of watching others doing the same thing that gives the day special meaning, honoring and showing love to those who will forever remain in our hearts. A former Monroe city councilman has another reason why he will not forget Mother's Day 2024. Kenneth Wilson and his wife went to pay their respects by laying flowers on the graves of his wife's mother and his sister in a Richwood cemetery. According to Wilson, right after he placed flowers on his sister's grave and rose up, he was walking back to his vehicle when he allegedly found himself facing Lebrone Robinson, husband of Kema Dawson. Wilson said Robinson allegedly told him "Not to come closer or say an m-f---ing word," and without warning, allegedly hit Wilson, knocking him backward. Because the grounds were muddy from recent rainfall, Wilson lost his balance and fell to the ground. Wilson said he regained his composure and a physical altercation ensued. He was able to knock the younger man away, causing him to fall toward a ditch. During the alleged encounter, Wilson said his thumb was dislocated, and a splint was placed on it when he received medical treatment for his injuries. The Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office was contacted even though the incident occurred in Richwood, as the town does not provide police protection on weekends. Deputies took a statement from Wilson and allegedly from Robinson. Wilson was also allegedly told by deputies that if there were no witnesses, it would essentially be a case of his word against Robinson's.
Wilson said he doesn't understand why the alleged attack happened, as he is known to be a quiet individual, both as a former councilman and for his work in the community. Wilson supported newly elected city councilman Verbon Muhammad, who defeated Kema Dawson for the District 5 council race, though he did not say that had anything to do with the alleged attack at the cemetery. Wilson said he hopes to hear more from law enforcement authorities concerning the incident.
