No Struggle, No Progress
A beloved establishment on Renwick and South 28th Streets in Monroe LA, which had stood the test of time, was allegedly set ablaze on Friday, April 12, 2024, according to fire officials. This spot was a monumental gathering place where hundreds of people spent their formative years, known as "The Block." Across the street, there was a corner store Humphrey's Grocery then Ford's Grocery, a barber/beauty shop, and a café in the back, where numerous "Block Boys" gathered in their youth. During the late 1960s and 70s, there was always someone there day or night, until around midnight most nights or later. What made the spot popular was the pay telephone and the overhang roof that provided shelter from the rain. It was a special place rain, sleet or snow, where no one ever got hurt or killed.
