No Struggle, No Progress
By Eddie D. Gillis
Donald Trump may have dodged a bullet on Monday, March 25, 2024, when a judge ruled that he didn’t have to pay $464 million to keep his empire from crumbling. With seemingly nowhere to turn and no one, not even his fellow billionaires, willing to bail him out, Trump faced further embarrassment. To many Americans, it was a sad spectacle, witnessing someone who had boasted all his adult life about how rich he was and his achievements in real estate. Until late Sunday night, March 24, 2024, that world seemed on the brink of collapse as Trump, his sons, and his army of lawyers did everything possible to prevent New York Attorney General Letitia James from initiating legal proceedings to seize Trump’s assets. The New York Appeals Court gave Trump a "Hail Mary" by ruling that he only needed to pay $175 million, with a 10-day grace period to settle the bond. This writer uses the term "Hail Mary" because many others in similar situations have prayed to avoid a court judgment that could financially ruin them. Donald Trump has been known for many things in his life, but not as a "praying man" seeking divine favor. Perhaps someone prayed for him on March 25.
Trump stated that he would pay the money "very quickly" and that he "respected" the court's decision. This contrasts sharply with his statements about prosecutors and judges who were moving forward with his trial. Trump knows he is not out of the woods; there are three other trials in his future, and legal fees are mounting. It should be understood that Trump is not a brilliant strategist who knows how to outmaneuver his enemies in the legal and business worlds. Rather, he is adept at finding lawyers and influential individuals who often manage to keep him out of legal trouble. Some might say he has an "aura of invincibility" by staying out of jail, where a lesser man might find himself incarcerated. There is a great divide among Americans; some believe Trump should have been imprisoned on federal charges alone, while others see him as a messiah sent by God to "save" America from Democrats, gay people, and immigrants.
Trump's best strategy, known to everyone, is to delay any court proceedings until at least the Republican presidential convention, where he hopes to secure the nomination. He knows that no court will try him while he goes head-to-head with President Joe Biden for the Oval Office. Many believe that the justice system will give Trump a pass, regardless of how many trials he faces. As long as Trump keeps winning court victories, he may believe he can beat the system. His support remains strong in red states, and he has allies in Congress who see him as a persecuted man.
Nevertheless, some believe a "day of reckoning" awaits Trump. They argue that if he manages to avoid prison, it would be a miscarriage of justice, showing that one man can turn the American justice system upside down. The world is watching, as is God
