Remembering Rufus Lewis Jr.

Rufus Lewis, Jr. was born April 7, 1943, to the proud parents of the late Rufus Lewis, Sr. and Onita McDonald Lewis. Rufus accepted Christ at an early age and attended Zion Traveler Baptist Church for several years. He graduated from Carroll High School in 1962. Shortly after graduation from high school, he enlisted in the Air Force where he served his country until he was honorably discharged. Rufus moved to Detroit Michigan in the early 1960's and became employed at General Motors in the Fisher Body Plant division. He later married his high school sweetheart, Lola Ballard and to this union three children were born. He subsequently retired from General Motors in the 1970's. Rufus is preceded in death by his parents, and two children, his son Rafus and daughter, Sharnette Lewis. He is survived by his two sons, David and Terry Lewis and his granddaughter, Lolita Sanford. Rufus had many close friends and enjoyed being at family gatherings. He had a passion for playing the card game spades, shooting pool and playing dominos. He leaves to cherish his memories his seven surviving siblings: Rose Moorhead, James "Bubba" Lewis, Bennie Jean Newman, Ann Louise Johnson, Lavern Jefferson, Paul Lewis and Frederick Lewis. His sister, Dr. Lyn Lewis preceded him in death. He will be greatly missed by two of his closest friends and classmates, Charita Davis and Rev. Otis Banks. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at James H. Cole Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel, 16100 Schaefer Hwy. Detroit, Michigan 48235. Family Hour will be at 3:00pm and the memorial Service at 4:00pm. The repast will be held at Baker's Keyboard Lounge at 6:00pm.
