Composting & Planting Raised Garden Beds!

On Thursday, July 20, 2023, at 11:00 at the Carver-McDonald Branch Library, Horticulture Kerry Heafner, LSU AgCenter will discuss about composting and raised garden beds. Compost is a mixture of ingredients used as plant fertilizer and to improve soil's physical, chemical, and biological properties. It is commonly prepared by decomposing plants and food waste, recycling organic materials, and manure. With composting, it helps to have a vision of what the entire process will look like. How to Compost-Start your compost pile on bare earth.; Lay twigs or straw first, a few inches deep. ..Add compost materials in layers, alternating moist and dry. ..Add manure, green manure (clover, buckwheat, wheatgrass, grass clippings) or any nitrogen source. ...Keep compost moist. Do NOT Compost-Plastic or plastic-coated products (e.g., plates, cups, etc.), Bioplastics. Styrofoam, Oil — except in small amounts (for example, greasy pizza boxes are usually ok if you scrape off food bits), Meat, bones, Dairy & Cooked foods.
