No Struggle, No Progress
Kierra J. Coleman is a Louisiana State University DVM (Doctor Veterinarian Medicine) class of 2023 graduate. Her accomplishments include being co-founder and president of the first Black affinity group on the vet school campus, the Student Association for Black Veterinarians (Fall 2019 - Fall 2021). The club was founded to create a safe space for Black and minority students to uplift, encourage, and support one another through the journey of veterinary medicine. The founders wanted to create an atmosphere that was conducive for minority students' success and confidence in the field since only 1% of veterinarians are Black, and imposter syndrome is a real factor in the outcome of academic and career success. This affinity group also welcomed allies from other races and ethnicities who were not Black or of minority status to help bridge cultural gaps in knowledge and understanding. The group prided itself on its ability to safely navigate tough conversations and educate others on things such as Black culture, micro & macro aggressions, and breaking stereotypes. It was also an important mission of the group to impact the youth through community outreach. In addition to this tremendous achievement, her other honors include Student Ambassador for Heartland Veterinary Partners, Fall 2019 - Fall 2022; Student member of the Diversity Committee, Fall 2019 - Spring 2023; Recipient of the Zoetis Foundation Veterinary Student Scholarship, March 2022; Recipient of the John D. Rhoades Leadership Scholarship, April 2022; Recipient of the Charles Herrington Award by the LSU Black faculty & staff caucus at the annual Black Scholars Program; and Recipient of the Bayou Kennel Club Scholarship, May 2023.
