No Struggle, No Progress
The family of Kaci Coleman continues to mourn the death of their loved one, as the Monroe Dispatch learned more details of the tragic incident that claimed her life. The Monroe Dispatch did an initial report of Coleman's death, confirmed through family members that she had been killed in what is believed to be an automobile accident on Hwy 34 during the early morning hours on Friday, March 10, 2023. According to law enforcement's account of the incident, Coleman was walking/running in the northbound lane, heading southbound, facing any traffic that way. The officer at the scene from Troop F of the Louisiana State Police (LSP) said that Coleman was receiving medical treatment on the scene accompanied by Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office deputies. Coleman was taken to St. Francis Medical Center while LSP interviewed witnesses who were at the scene. According to the report, there was extensive damage to the vehicle's right front hood, windshield, and roof that allegedly hit Coleman, sending her body through the air as it came to rest in the northbound lane of Hwy 34. The roadway conditions were good, as a shoe from Coleman's body was recovered, and there was blood on the roadway. She was allegedly hit by someone identified as Driver #1, who was said to have tried to avoid making contact with Coleman, but couldn't because it was too late to avoid contact. According to the report, other witnesses confirmed that Driver #1 hit something as they tried to assist, as the force from the impact of the vehicle allegedly knocked a shoe from Coleman's body. Another witness, who was said to be heading in the southbound lane, saw the crash and realized it was a person who had been hit. Driver #1 was said to have submitted voluntarily to an Intoxilyzer for alcohol impairment for Blood Alcohol Concentration(BAC) and was found to be alcohol-free. The report further states that Coleman was taken to St. Francis, followed by LSP Troopers. While at St. Francis, they were given information with phone numbers and addresses on file. They went to the last known address, but no one allegedly knew Coleman, and a phone number was no longer working. The report said that another witness said that Coleman was observed walking on Hwy 34 prior to the crash. The witness also said that she had to veer away from Coleman, and others behind her had to do the same. Officers would learn that Coleman was airlifted to LSU-Ochsner Medical Center in Shreveport, LA. A family member was notified that Coleman had died on March 14, 2023 at 1025 hours. They contacted Shreveport at 1330 hours on the same day and were told that Coleman had, in fact, died on March 11, 2023 at 0419 hours, as the body would be sent to Little Rock, AR for an autopsy. Coleman's body was taken to Smith Funeral Home in Monroe. On March 15, contact was made with Coleman's brother. LSP concluded in its report that Driver #1 made contact with Coleman, resulting in damage to the vehicle. The report also stated that after making contact with Coleman, the vehicle came to a stop approximately 70 feet after impact. Kaci Coleman's funeral services were held Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at Smith Funeral Home in Monroe, LA.
