Sunrise October 30, 1943 Sunset March 12, 2023

Val Jean Purnell was born October 30, 1943 to Hilton Lee and Mildred Purnell of Monroe, LA. Val Jean was the elder of a pair of fraternal twins. He gave his life to Christ at an early age at Martin Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Monroe, LA. At church, Val held many positions, including Sunday School Superintendent and Christian Youth Fellowship Activities Leader, where he helped develop youth and strengthen their relationship with God. He attended local schools and was a Carroll High School 1963 graduate. Val had an array of interests in performing arts, interior decoration, and fashion. While working as a professional, he served as a dietitian at Calypso Day Care and Mini-World Daycare. While in high school, Val was the drum major leading the entire band and contributing to the band's many traditions. He eventually became an active band parent with the Carroll High School band, one that everyone knew. Val was an excellent dancer. At the Matador Balls back in the day, Val would accompany the late Trudy Roggerson, and they danced the night away. His mother, father, and twin sister Myra preceded him in death. Val was one of the most loving souls anyone could encounter. He had a heart of gold. If he saw one in need, he would help in anyway feasible. Val is survived by nephews John Purnell, Charles and Jason Scott of Monroe, LA; great nephews - Shawn Purnell of Evans, GA, Brian and Brandon Scott of Monroe, LA; great nieces - Bianca Scott of Monroe, LA, Jazmin A. Scott of Miami, FL and a host of family and friends. Funeral services are Thursday, March 23, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Smith Funeral Home in Monroe, LA.
