No Struggle, No Progress

Heated Richwood Meeting ...Another Side

In the Monroe Dispatch, Volume 50, Number 9, Edition 1, I am categorized as "offering" an Alderperson to go outside in the article entitled, "Heated Richwood Town Meeting". I did because we might be able to understand each other better in a one-on-one setting. I never approached or threatened anyone, and after a few moments, I returned to the table, and the meeting continued. I was certain that since that seemed to have been an issue last March that the paper would want to print that at the town of Richwood's December meeting held on December 15, 2022, Alderman Wilbert Reed asked Alderman Simeon Profit if he wanted him to take him outside so he could kick his butt. The exchange began as Mr. Reed was being asked for his vote on the budget, and he initially [did] but moments later said go to someone else. I asked if he was abstaining. Mr. Profit laughed, picked up his microphone, and told Mr. Reed to adopt the budget, which has been on the table since June of this year and is six months past due. Mr. Reed then made a motion to adjourn the meeting even though there was an open agenda item and two others remaining on the agenda, and two other board members (Mr. Cleveland and Mrs. Keys) hurriedly offered their seconds. Mr. Profit and I attempted to calm Mr. Reed down and continue our important meeting, but Mr. Reed said, "Now see, he done p-ssed me off," pointing at Mr. Profit. Mr. Profit and I again tried to get Mr. Reed back on task, but he again asked for adjournment, and I felt it best at that [point] to go ahead and adjourn the meeting as Mr. Cleveland had already moved away from the table and Mrs. Keys had risen from her seat, and Mr. Reed was visibly upset. In my estimation, the meeting was over from a productivity standpoint. At that point, Mr. Reed became more agitated and stood up, pointing at Mr. Profit, saying, "you got one more word to say to me, and I'm gone put my foot..." (the rest of the statement was inaudible). He then stood over Mr. Profit and had to be moved away by a police officer. Mr. Reed continued to scream at Mr. Profit and again told him to "come on outside". Mr. Reed continued to shout at Mr. Profit, calling him names which I won't repeat in this commentary because it would be distasteful. The bottom line here is that though there were three important ordinances to be voted on, and the majority of the board decided that because Mr. Reed was upset that there was no reason to do the jobs, they were voted into office and paid to do. This meeting can be seen on the town of Richwood's Facebook page. There are three sides to every story. This was another side of this story. The Monroe Dispatch welcomes another side of this story.
