Senseless Shooting

Disclaimer: All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty. A woman and her unborn child's life was taken away following a tragic shooting incident that happened in Bastrop, LA, Monday, November 7, 2022. According to the Bastrop Police Department (BPD), a call came in that a shooting occurred at the start of the week. Police arrived on E Cypress St., where the alleged shooting occurred, and found a Black female victim who was deceased in the front yard. According to Bastrop PD, the female victim, identified as 33-year-old Velma L. Walker, died from multiple gunshot wounds. Velma L. Walker has Monroe ties. An arrest of the alleged shooter didn't take long, as police reports said that while units were heading to the crime scene, an individual fitting the description of the suspected shooter was seen walking west on E. Cypress St. Officers detained the individual, identified as 44-year-old Donovin C. White. While in the custody of officers, White was found to have had in his possession a .40 caliber handgun, a box of .40 caliber ammunition, 922 grams of marijuana, and 57 ecstasy pills, according to police reports. Police also revealed grim news that the victim, Walker, was three to five months pregnant. White was charged with: Two Counts of Second Degree Murder, Cruelty to a Juvenile, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Distribution of Scheduled One and Scheduled Two Drugs. The community is again appalled and shocked by the senseless loss of not one but two lives. One life never got the chance to live. It is a sad commentary on the times that we are living. Velma L. Walker has Monroe ties.
