No Struggle, No Progress

Richwood Budget Troubles

Another battle over the town of Richwood's new fiscal year budget appears headed for another showdown between Mayor Gerald Brown and some on the town's alderperson board. The town had gone through a contentious battle between Brown and three town alderpersons that saw a lot of finger-pointing. The state became involved at one point and offered some clarity for the group working to move forward. At the heart of the possible looming conflict is settling financial issues from the current budget, which is set to expire. The mayor allegedly did not spend money on allocated items in last year's budget. The board approved for him to spend money on things that would help the town put away its financial obligations but believes he is not taking care of the town's business. Those who are in disagreement with Brown have been vocal, as they don't want to have a repeat of what happened last year that almost tore the town apart. A sticking point to be resolved before the passage of a new budget is to see a report from the town's auditors showing the citizens what kind of financial shape the town is in, but there is disappointment from three of the town's alderpersons, as Brown is alleged to have not spent money on items that the board had passed. Judgments against the town have been long outstanding, as it was alleged that a town lawyer said to let the judgments against the town "run out". Now Brown is alleged to be asking to spend money in the new budget that he didn't do on items the board approved for him to spend. He is asking to spend money in the new budget on the things that should have been taken care of in last year's budget. Those who foresee problems with the mayor want to resolve all budgetary issues before they have to vote on the new budget and are hoping to meet with Brown as soon as possible to resolve any outstanding issues concerning the current budget before a new one is passed.
