LA Historical Marker Dedication & Unveiling

The Rayville Rosenwald/Eula D. Britton Alumni Association, an organization that represents the original African American School that operated in Rayville, LA, from 1904 until its closing in 1970, invites you to a special event on Friday, June 17, 2022, 12:30 PM at the Rayville Rosenwald/Eula D. Britton Alumni Center, 103 Cotton Street, Rayville, LA. The organization will celebrate and dedicate the Louisiana Historical Marker awarded to the Alumni Association in 2020, recognizing the only remaining building from the school, the Gymnasium, which opened in 1952. The marker is the first of its kind to be awarded in Richland Parish. The organization will honor a pioneering graduate of the school, Christine Hayes Chapman Minor, class of 1950, who became the first African American female professor to be granted tenure at Louisiana State University in 1976. She passed away in 1978. Christine's younger brother is the NBA legend Elvin "Big E" Hayes, who will be in attendance. Friday, June 17, 2022, will be the first day of the 2022 Alumni Reunion (June 17-19), where they will also celebrate for the first time the recently declared national holiday, Juneteenth. Rayville Rosenwald/Eula D. Britton Alumni Association Executive Board Members are Elaine Elder-Coleman, President; Lumas Broussard, Vice President; Charlene Goods, Secretary; Barbara Armstrong, Financial Secretary; Clara Wilson, Treasurer; Annie Stewart-Staten, Historian; Charlestine Burnette, Parliamentarian; and Freddy Rivers, Sergeant at Arms.
