No Struggle, No Progress

Shootings Frequent Deadly

Shootings are happening more frequently in Monroe, LA, just as any community in the US, creating an unusual amount of uncertainty about where residents feel safe, especially in Black communities. Places that we once thought were safe are now terrifying in broad daylight, not to mention the fear they hold after dark. According to police reports, on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, police were summoned to a shooting on Spurgeon Dr. where a dispute got out of hand between two groups that led to gunfire, with a victim losing their life. Police discovered a 17-year-old victim with a gunshot to the chest who died at the scene. Sources tell the Dispatch that the victim was a twin; it is alleged that the other twin was also involved and is receiving treatment at a local hospital. Numerous shots were fired where a victim was transported to the hospital. Witnesses gave police details of the shooting, and video footage captured the shooting where a suspect was seen and identified. Officers identified suspect Eugene D. Williams after identifying him shooting a firearm toward the victim. The vehicle the suspect was driving had numerous bullet holes confirming gunplay. A firearm was also found in the suspect's vehicle. Williams was arrested and charged with Second-degree murder. An investigation is continuing with more arrests looming. Also, an unrelated shooting occurred at Carroll High School while fans who were leaving a basketball game got into an altercation with vehicle burglars. Shots were fired, and the would-be burglars fled.

Exercise caution when dealing with others; taking time to think twice about violence could be the difference between life or death for you and someone else. There are three sides to every story. This was one side of this story. The Monroe Dispatch welcomes another or the other side of this story.
