No Struggle, No Progress

Ghost of Ronald Greene

Police Reform has been at the top of the list since Governor John Bel Edwards became governor. Though LSP released an initial statement saying that Greene's death resulted from an automobile crash following a high-speed chase between him and pursuing officers, it was not true. According to what is now known, that is not what Reeves told the governor hours after Greene died. Reeves only mentioned a "lengthy struggle'' with Troopers, and that Greene became unresponsive by the time EMTs were called, and Greene died shortly after. Reeves allegedly told the governor one thing concerning Greene's death Even though Greene's family and the Black community didn't believe LSP's version of what happened to Greene, it became more of a mystery when Reeves "suddenly retired" and Edwards commented on how great Reeves was as Superintendent. At the same time, nothing was said or done about the circumstances regarding Greene's death. When the videos of what really happened to Greene were exposed, LSP went into damage control because now the new Supt. Col. Lamar Davis, appointed by Edwards, had a lot of questions to answer. Even though the public was aware of the video cams worn by LSP Troopers, those videos were withheld. Edwards could be called "law and order" because law enforcement runs in his family. He knows what it means to be loyal to police officers and has managed to keep himself separated from controversial cases where police officers are involved in excessive force cases. When the videos became public, Edwards was forced to say something, which only amounted to him saying that the officers' actions were "deeply unprofessional and incredibly disturbing". Though Edwards would later say that the officers' actions "were criminal", he didn't tell Supt. Davis to "leave no stone unturned" getting to the truth of what really happened to Ronald Greene. Black legislator Cleo Fields has many questions, especially when Edwards allegedly told Rep. Clay Schexnayder that a legislative inquiry into Greene's death may have been necessary, Edwards allegedly said there "was no need", because Greene died in a car wreck. Getting to the truth of who was involved in Greene's investigation from investigators and those higher up has been difficult. The public knows of some of those involved, but those at the top have refused to testify at committee hearings. It looks as though the whole truth won't be revealed until the Department of Justice completes its probe and after top brass at LSP, including Supt. Davis gives testimony. Edwards has enjoyed strong support from the African-American community and has good relationships with the Louisiana Black Caucus. We all want good policing, as we want accountability from those who break the law. The ghost of Ronald Greene will haunt Louisiana until the truth is revealed and rectified. We pray and hope another death like Greene's never happens again, especially at the hands of those who've taken the oath to protect and serve and are paid by the state's taxpayers. Many of the old statements of controversial incidents, which are still under investigation by state officials and law enforcement years later, are all so suspect. Maybe we are all suffering the consequences, guilty or not. What's done in the dark will come to light.
