Our federal, state, and local governments are considered democracies. With a democracy, there are checks and balances within each branch of government. Things are in place and have been since the founding of America to prevent skewed activity by administrations and governing bodies. Months ago, the Monroe City Council heard a proposed amendment that would give the mayor of the city the power to hand out contracts valued at $250,000 or less to individuals and companies without council vote or approval.
