No Struggle, No Progress
All of God's Commandments are important for us to follow, and there is one that can help one live a long life. The one where we are to "honor our father and mother" should be upheld to show love and respect to them. Yes, we may all have disagreements with our parents, but one must remember who is the parent and who is the child. Parents are legally responsible for us until the age of 18, and after that, we are on our own. Circumstances sometimes dictate that parents extend their guardianship further depending on a child's health or mental capacities. When a child is outright rebellious, the umbilical cord is cut not only physically but also spiritually in the eyes of God because when that child raises their hand against his parent, bad things are sure to follow. Jaylen Dewayne Webster, 17, is about to find out just how bad things can get. Webster was taken into custody by Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office Deputies for allegedly firing shots at his mother at a residence in West Monroe, LA, on Sunday, October 10, 2021. According to police reports, Webster was involved in an argument with his mother, and instead of walking away or leaving the residence, he allegedly produced a handgun and fired several shots in the direction of his mother. Police responding to reports of shots fired quickly made contact with Webster without incident and placed him in custody. Webster allegedly admitted that he fired several shots but held the gun towards the floor. Webster also allegedly fired several more shots outside of the residence. His mother and a sister disputed Webster's account as deputies observed bullet holes in the residence in the direction of the mother. Webster was charged with Second Degree Attempted Murder, Illegal Carrying of a Weapon, and Illegal Usage of Weapons. As of press time, Webster is currently being held at the Ouachita Correctional Center. It is a sad fact that Webster is not alone when it comes to children assaulting their parents. Equally sadly, there will be more. The Bible warns us that "children will raise" their hand against the parents in the last days because of the spirit within them. And that spirit is not of God. We should be thankful that Webster didn't kill his mother. Perhaps in time, Webster and others like him will have an opportunity to reflect on what he is accused of doing and try to change his ways. This is not an indictment against his family, but we as a society are hopeful that the next child will think before they act.
