No Struggle, No Progress
On yesterday Tuesday, April 19, 2021, Derek Chauvin was found guilty for the murder of George Floyd. I spoke to friends before the verdict was announced, and many were nervous to hear the outcome. We have been conditioned to mourn the many lost at the hands of police violence and brutality not only once but twice after those responsible for their lives receive little to no accountability in the court of law. We are used to having to carry the weight of being on the receiving end of cruel treatment with no punishment given to those who abuse their responsibility.
Yesterday that changed. One moment has given people a little more optimism in the country’s justice system; a glimpse of hope has been revealed for the future as it pertains to justice. I can not bring myself to celebrate because there are so many more inequities that we have to continue to fight to change. This verdict was only a tiny chip to destroy racial bias, abuse, and injustice in our country.
While the judge read the decision, an unarmed Black teenage girl was shot by law enforcement in Columbus, OH. Since last year there have been countless incidents involving law enforcement officials and Blacks who are no longer alive; and nothing can bring back a life. Someone has to be held accountable for negligence. Many more need to be held responsible for their recklessness until all police officers across the country learn to exercise a level of respect when dealing with people as if they are interacting with their own loved ones. Then I will jump for joy.
