No Struggle, No Progress
Yesterday the world witnessed Joseph Biden become the 45th President of the United States of America and Kamala Harris become the first female Vice President of the United States of America. I am happy that the country's newly elected President and Vice President were able to have their moment in time, being honored at the steps of the nation's capitol in a prestigious traditional ceremony. For the next four years, they will lead the country to create and approve policy that pushes the nation forward. New leadership always reflects the potential of what is to come. It is easy to be a patriot when you see someone like you leading the country. Besides skin tone, there can be similarities in thought, especially regarding creating more space for diversity. Diversity including race, ethnicity, age, and sex. The United States of America has always been a diverse society, hence the use of the word 'united'. From Native Americans to colonizers, this country has a blended story of people and experiences. Unfortunately, though, not all have had the freedom to share their truths. If the hard truths are shared and known, it would create understanding. There has to be a willingness to accept the truth without the self-consciousness of how one may look to create understanding. I would presume this - having a leader that looks like them - is one reason why those who oppose the Biden/Harris ticket have been so upset. Surely though, since we now live in the 21st Century, all must come to an accord in seeing that there is no turning back. There's enough hurt and harm in this world as is. We must unite and build on our strengths to continue creating a country we can all be proud to call home.
