No Struggle, No Progress
A few years ago, the term “woke” became a popular phrase that was initially used exclusively among Blacks to express a new level of consciousness gained after being aware of the world's actual realities. In the “woke” state of mind, it is the expectation that one would not only claim that they have accepted certain truths, but too then 1) share their level of knowledge with others, and 2) advocate for what they have been awakened to realize.
Since the death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis, MN, there has been a new awakening by many regarding the injustices that are inflicted on Blacks in our country. Many around the country, even throughout the globe, have shouted that enough is enough and that they would no longer stand with and support those who continue to perpetuate the oppression of people of color. Companies, organizations, brands, and individuals have also released statements and opened dialog to hear Blacks' grievances in attempts to rectify wrongs.
I believe consciousness is the universe's way of igniting change. As we continue to evolve, I hope that we all awaken to many different realities and speak out in efforts to leave things better than they are. Truly, and not in a superficial way that only serves our own personal interests.
Martin Luther King once said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” Let us all find the courage to stand up for what is right in a way that reflects our values and supports positive growth for ourselves and those that come behind us.
