Mayor Jamie Mayor, BBA Graduate of ULM (1979) Monroe, LA, has proven leadership in government, business, education, and community affairs. Mayor Mayo has served as co-chair of Governor Jon Bel Edwards Transition Team (in 2015), and he has helped progress the city's professional workforce with significant job growth at CenturyLink, Gardner-Denver Thomas, IBM, Graphic Packaging, along with 2,000 new businesses (of all sizes) who have set up shop in Monroe during his administration.
Mayor Mayo has saved local jobs by investing in economic development funds that benefit St. Francis Medical Center and supported Ochsner Medical Center. The city has won multiple state and national awards, including an LMA award for economic development, citywide infrastructure improvements (water, sewer, roads, bridges) with him as the leader. The city has gained a 21st century airport terminal and ongoing economic growth with its industrial air park, lead by Mayor Mayo.
Monroe was one of the first municipal administrations in the state to initiate a $10 minimum wage. Downtown development (the River Market, River Jams, art crawls, restaurants & housing), state-of-the art Fire & Police Public Safety Center, and a Class 1 fire rating (which reduces insurance costs and saves home and business owners' money) are all successes due to Mayor Mayo's leadership.
Additionally, Monroe boasts as one of the first municipal administrations in the state to initiate use of police body cameras; has updated fire and police vehicle fleets; has provided seed money to Southside Economic Development District; has completed major renovations at all recreation community centers; has created multiple citywide public and private housing developments; has implemented stronger partnerships in education at primary, secondary, and collegiate levels; has supported VCOM Medical School; has restored a $60 million water system improvement project; has gotten $34 million added to the Tower Armand and I-20 economic districts; reduced overall crime; has secured funds to reduce flooding in Monroe; and has awarded more than 150 community service scholarships to graduating high school seniors at Carroll, Neville, Wossman, Ouachita Christian, River Oaks, and St. Frederick High Schools - all under Mayor Mayo's leadership.
