No Struggle, No Progress
Lately, I’ve observed mannerisms and attitudes from both my parents that mimic the same as their parents. I’ve noticed that my dad can fall asleep on the couch seconds after he’s sat down and how he scratches the top of his head the same as my grandfather did. I’ve noticed that my mom walks leaning over for a few steps when she’s getting up from being seated, and she keeps everything, the same as my grandmother does.
Whether they realized it or not, they do these and many other things the same as their parents have, and it is often funny to watch. Sometimes when they do something now, I don’t even see my mom and dad, but instead, see my grandparents. I often have to do a double-take, but it makes me think – maybe this is the way God intended it to be. This is perhaps, a small way our ancestors and relatives live on.
I have been places around people who know my parents and sometimes hear, “You act just like your dad” or “That’s something your mom would say.” I used to laugh hysterically because, at one time, I would have never thought I would act like my parents or even get offended that I was not seen as myself. Now that I am older, I understand those comments and laugh when someone identifies it.
When we spend time with people, we develop ways that are similar and sometimes exactly like one another. This is why it is important to surround ourselves with people whom we want to emulate. It is also equally important to ask ourselves, are we behaving in a way that we would want others to mimic?
