No Struggle, No Progress

Line in the Sand

As each day passes into the next, we see a nation that is continually being divided. What was once supposedly seen as a nation where people could be free, has now turned into a nation where two sides are vying for the hearts and minds of its’ citizens. We are divided into conservative and liberal groups where control is the ultimate goal, either to continue on the path that we are on, or go in another direction. Many people are not happy with the way that this nation’s affairs ae being handled. Instead of finding common ground on issues that affect us all in some way, the threat of the coronavirus is proving otherwise. It’s not a matter of what this administration says what it will do, but actually watching what it is doing and not doing. The president has talked a tough aggressive game plan, but only after the virus has proven to be a serious and deadly threat that is out of control. There are groups out there trying to keep the public informed on what exactly is going on at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. behind the scenes. People For the American Way (PFAW) is such a group dedicated to keeping the public aware of how this administration uses tactics of its supporters to portray itself in control of a pandemic when it is not. Those supporters include media outlets that the president watches almost on a daily basis, as he sends “talking points” to media personalities that they use. Words such as “fake” and “hoax” were used by these media outlets after hearing the president say them, knowing that the president has a receptive audience in red states.

The 2020 presidential election is on the mind of the president because he once said that Democrats are using the virus as a “hoax” to prevent him from being reelected. People should remember that the president had time to act before COVID-19 got out of control, but he didn’t. He is being defended by his supporters, even though they know that the facts as the world/nation know them, do not vindicate the president. The election is important to the president because it will give Republicans more ways in states to conjure up new ways to suppress voter turnout against minorities. The governors’ races in Florida and Georgia proved how far Republicans will go to deny minorities who are a threat to their power, their constitutional right to vote. Republicans, as long as they are in control of the Senate with a Republican president, know that they can appoint judges to federal positions that have shown a propensity to rule against minorities.

Democrats in Congress will seek ways to ensure that the 2020 presidential election will proceed as the Constitution mandates. One can hope that the pandemic will have ran its course without a significant loss of life, as things get back to a sense of normalcy. But even in the best of time, the right to vote for millions of people has been denied by laws enacted and signed into law by Republican governors and upheld by judges on the federal level. According to PFAW, the president is reported to have said, “if they(minorities) had things---levels of voting that, if you ever agreed to it, you’d never have a Republican elected in this country” to Fox and Friends recently, after signaling that he may nominate a Mississippi judge to a federal judgeship. But conservative groups continue to wonder why minorities vote Democrat. Why would a president say such a statement after claiming that he had “great support” from black people? Pay close attention to how the president handles the coronavirus over the next several months and how he will conduct his campaign. Play close attention. Remember, the world is watching. So is God.
