No Struggle, No Progress
President Donald Trump will rightfully take the credit for the death of a noted terrorist who was recently killed when he reportedly committed suicide when surrounded by U.S. forces. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi killed himself and several family members during a U.S. raid that will be a victory in the war on terror, but he was no Osama bin Laden. That is not to minimize the impact of Baghdadi’s death, but victories like these don’t occur as often as the U.S. military would like them. There has been no more terrorist attacks in the U.S. since 9-11, when the Twin Towers and the Pentagon were attacked by terrorist mostly from Saudi Arabia. President Trump will take what/when he can, as any news that will deflect from the impeachment inquiry that is underway by Democrats, will serve the president in the short run. That is, if the president doesn’t make the death of Baghdadi all about himself. As with anything that has been positive in this administration (not many), President Trump takes all of the credit for himself. The president seems to think or forget, that though he is the president, he is not the whole Executive Branch. It’s like a quarterback forgetting about the other ten guys on the field with him, whether the team win or lose. But in this case, President Trump is seen as the head coach, the one guy who is responsible for the outcome of the game-win or lose. He makes the decisions and is responsible for holding the team(administration) together. Not President Trump. Imagine if the raid had not been successful.
When Osama Bin Laden was killed, Trump at the time gave no credit to then President Obama, reportedly saying that President Obama “should not be congratulated”, but that the credit should go the military unit that carried out the mission. Obama got credit for the victory, but conservatives at the time did not say “well done, Mr. President”. How do we know? Because if they had, Trump and others would have said, give credit to the military, that all Obama did was, give the order. But what if the bin Laden mission had failed? There would have been nonstop criticism that Obama was a “failed, weak president”, with Trump undoubtedly leading the way. As these words are being written, President Trump is trying to make his success bigger than Obama’s. He will say things that are not true, things like, that he “was right all along”, to the pulling of troops out of Syria. And perhaps the impeachment tide. The president is under the illusion that Baghdadi’s death will somehow turn the tide in the war against terror. After bin Laden and other noted terrorist’s deaths, the U.S. still is fighting what many have called an endless war.
But as mentioned earlier, the impeachment inquiry will continue. President Trump no doubt will say that he is not “being treated” fairly by the press. His supporters will say that the president “cannot do his job” with the threat of a possible impeachment looming in his future. They will say all of these things(and more),except say that the president must be held accountable for his actions, if he has violated any laws of the Constitution. Those actions include trying to block witnesses from testifying after they have legally been issued subpoenas, to the phone call that Trump made and the words that Trump said. One must remember, no one put words in President Trump mouth. Even if the president hears someone say something that he likes, it is the president who has the final word, because as the president is finally seeing, that his words have consequences. Remember, the world is watching. So is God.
