No Struggle, No Progress

Understanding

Understanding

By Jessica DeTiege

Soul artists Jerry Butler and Brenda Lee Eager, created a song in the 1970's entitled, "Ain't Understanding Mellow". Besides the memorable melody at the start and catchy baseline, the song is allegedly about the understanding of two people who are breaking up. In the song, the two share an understanding of the love they share coming to an end but keep a mutual love and respect for one another. Understanding is needed in all relationships, whether romantic or platonic. Most relationships go awry when people don't share the same understanding. After all, it is easy to misunderstand things that people do and say. Confusion is meant to be destructive, but understanding is meant to create healing and cohesiveness. The best way to give understanding and gain it is to be honest and clear about what is happening. Things can't be fixed if people are afraid to say what they really feel and think out of fear of someone else's misunderstanding. In turn, all parties must be able to be ok with things that they are told in honesty. Understanding isn't always easy but it is important for there to be peace.
