Inmate Seeking Outside Legal Help

Gary Brooks, an inmate incarcerated in the Louisiana State Penitentiary under the direction of D.O.C (Department of Corrections) is seeking outside legal help in his case in which he was convicted of second degree murder on February 6, 2002 of Melvin Fuller in the Fourth Judicial District Court of Ouachita Parish without a fair trial, or pre-trial motion. Brooks contends that defense counsel did not perform any investigation, make any objections to the jury who were reading a newspaper during the trail, and made inconsistent statements that did not pertain to the case. He believes that this lack of preparation and defense deprived him of a fair trial which is a violation of the fourteenth amendment of the U.S. Constitution and Article 1 & 2 of the Louisiana Constitution of 1974.

Brooks was sentenced to serve a term of imprisonment of life without the benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence, and is earnestly ask for help. He is asking legal help along with donations from good samaritans and organizations to help with payment for legal fees and resources. He believes public defenders are the essential part of why men and women being incarcerated by the thousands every year. When public defenders do not have access to sufficient legal resources, they’re unable to interview key witnesses, collect or test physical evidence or generally prepare and provide a quality defense for their client. He also believes the public has elected officials into office but neglected the duty to hold them responsible and accountable to the people they serve for true and effective representation in government in the criminal justice system. Brooks also believes community support makes it possible for citizens to stand up for everyone's constitutional rights.
