Juneteenth celebrates the freedom of over 250,000 slaves at the close of the Civil War. The holiday is based on events that occurred mainly in Texas but is now celebrated nationwide. The celebration takes its name from June 19, 1865; the day federal troops arrived in Galveston to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. Although the Proclamation had taken effect on January 1, 1863, it freed few, if any, slaves. News of the war's end did not reach Texas until well after the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. Many speculate that the news was deli...
When Jacques D. Lowery was arrested on a multitude of charges several weeks ago, it hopefully will mark the end of a campaign of violence against Monroe resident Shardra Green and her family. Lowery allegedly was in a relationship with Green's daughter that started out like many relationships, but it soon turned violent. According to Green, at first glance, Lowery seemed like an "ok" guy, but when her daughter showed signs of domestic abuse, the mother instantly knew that something was wrong....

A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. The Williams family mourned the passing of Katrina Nicole Williams, born October 27, 1983, in Monroe, LA. Katrina was a faithful member of Spring Lake Church of God in Christ, where she accepted Christ at an early age, under the...
With cities across America now removing confederate statues and names, now is the time for the Monroe City School Board to rename those schools that represent slavery, a symbol of shame to everyone and injustice to Black people. Thomas Jefferson and Robert E. Lee name should be removed and renamed ASAP. We thank the City School Board for renaming Abraham Lincoln Elementary. Black and white should be involved in choosing the new names. Some may ask why? If we are to try in healing the racial...
It was my original intent to comment on Covid-19, the Coronavirus Pandemic, and the challenges that Mayors across this country have had to endure as a result. However, being a black man in this country and watching a white police officer literally squeeze the life out of George Floyd, an African-American, in Minneapolis a few days ago, I realized that this topic should take center stage as we as Black Americans are trying our best to reconcile how to appropriately respond to the brutal murder. F...

All things come of thee and of thine own have we given thee (1 Chronicles 29: 14) God has blessed the United States as well as other nations with great material wealth. [ 1 Chronicles 28:8] It’s God’s will that we give him praise, and continue to mag...
2 Corinthians 12:9 | NKJV And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Oh, Beloved let the Power of Jesus rest upon us, Let the glory of the Lord rule, reign and abide within us. Rejoice today knowing that in spite of our infirmities, weaknesses, mistakes or iniquities that Jesus is still there. He Rises up within us with incredible Pro...
By Eddie D. Gillis Has anyone noticed how quiet Republicans/conservatives has gotten since Saints quarterback Drew Brees has inserted himself in the flag kneeling National Anthem controversy? There has not been one Republican who has openly criticized Brees for his amended statement addressing the kneeling controversy. Not even a sound from VP Mike Pence, who usually echoes what the president says. Louisiana Republicans were all over Colin Kaepernick four years, and were all for him being out of football. But now, Brees has taped their mouths s...
The most important question I have asked myself in these last few weeks is what message God is trying to send to us in all of this we are facing? I ask this question because I try to make Christianity the most important thing in my life. Although I often fall short, Christianity has given me principles by which I have chosen to live my life. I understand and accept that all people are not Christians (even if this is something that they proclaim). I accept that we all have a choice to believe what we chose. What I have seen and experienced is...

The True Church Jesus said, I will build my church. He did not say I will build churches, denominations or sects. He said the gates of hell would not prevail against it. Where is that true church today and what is the church? Why does it exist? The church I am talking about is the one Jesus Christ founded and carries His mission, His church cannot be destroyed because Jesus said that He would always be in the mist Jesus called His disciples who were to become the foundation of the church, to come out from among the world and be separate (II...
