  • Berry Betrayal

    Jan 19, 2023

Dear Black people of Monroe, LA, Why do we sit back and allow our own people to oppress us and deny us the progress that we seek and fight so hard to succeed and achieve for our people? Witnessing the voting process at the Monroe City School Board meeting held Tuesday, January 10, 2023, was humiliating and demeaning. It was especially disturbing to see Betty Ward Cooper be betrayed, stabbed in the back, and trampled over by Daryll Berry, who single-handedly made a mockery of our Black struggles...

  • Nig-er Day Post

    Jan 19, 2023

An alleged hurtful and harmful racial remark made by a local woman who works in education is making its rounds. Many area residents are disappointed to learn that former Ouachita Parish Junior High School secretary Nelwyn Poland Fontana allegedly referred to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as "Ni****" Day in a text conversation between her and a school coach. The exchange was shared via social media and has since gone micro-viral. It is unclear if Fontana resigned or was fired from her job, but she is no longer with the school. Unfortunately, many...

  • City Schools' Cafeteria Workers Conditions Deplorable

    Eddie D. Gillis|Jan 19, 2023

All of us who have gone to school have wonderful memories of those formative years in grade school, learning and interacting with others. That extends into our high school years, collecting memories. Some memories we remember more than others, but this writer is convinced that just about everyone will remember someone who worked in the school cafeteria. Yes, those tireless workers who are up at the crack of dawn year-round to greet and serve the children. When students get to school in the morning, the first people they see are most often the c...

  • Golden Berry's Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Lawsuit

    Jan 19, 2023

In April 2020 a lower court in Monroe, LA overstepped when denying Berry's wrongful termination and retaliation claim against the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office. Berry appealed this decision, and the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the ruling of the lower court in favor of Berry. This now gives Berry the opportunity to prove his case in court with a jury trial. The Fifth Circuit Court Of Appeals cited several inconsistencies to arrive at their decision. (1) Timing in which Berry was fired versus when he filed his initial complaint...

  • Southside/SEDD Shambles

    Jan 19, 2023

There are many to blame for the deplorable conditions in most areas of the southside of Monroe LA, but residents are most at fault for allowing conditions to become so dire. The residents of the southside have not held its representatives accountable for achieving goals that signal progression for the area, nor have residents submitted a plan in writing to elected city council representatives, which would hold them accountable for the community’s demise. Voters and residents have attended numerous community meetings, but still, nothing has b...

  • Don't Expect Big Things To Happen

    Eddie D. Gillis|Jan 19, 2023

If most Americans think that Republicans in Washington D.C. are going to bring a wave of prosperity to the nation because they are in charge of the House, they are sadly mistaken. As long as the nation is divided along every line that one can think, that being racial, political, cultural, or economic, don’t expect anything of substance to be done. I would love to be wrong, but this nation “crossed the line of separation” a long time ago, as there are those who are making sure that this nation never becomes “united” if it ever was. Democrats...

  • True Riches

    Katima Epting-Wiley|Jan 19, 2023

Acts 13:47 For so has the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set you to be a light of the Gentiles, that you should be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. Today’s generation is all about the glitter, glitz and gold. Many want the spotlight. People are becoming more devalued, and dead things, that can’t comfort, heal or love, are what the highest value is being placed upon. If one isn’t claiming to be a boss, it’s like he/she has no significance. This world is more material than anythin...

  • 'SKIN AND BONES'

    Po Folks Poet Marion Obafemi|Jan 19, 2023

Depression is a state of mind that can be caused by the realization that our lives are not unfolding as we envisioned it would. Our moods can be influenced by the interaction with others and what they say to us which may alter normal behaviors such as the desire to eat. We must guard our minds and spirits against those negative energies that can rob us of the positive vibrations needed to fulfill our destinies. I "rolled" (wrote) this "joint" (poem) so we can "smoke" (read) it to gain the strength and courage to resist and fight back against...
