  • Will Trump Testify? Probably Not

    Eddie Gillis|Nov 21, 2019

Last week at the start of the impeachment of President Trump, Democrats and Republicans questioned former Ukraine Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch about her role as it related to the infamous call made by President Donald Trump. Yovanovitch, a career diplomat of 33 years had served under 5 different presidents from both parties. She had an impressive career as a diplomat, receiving numerous awards for her service to her country. She was not known to have been “a troublemaker” during her career, just quietly doing her job. The only problem was tha...

  • Words Matter

    Eddie Gillis|Nov 14, 2019

Just for the record, Nancy Pelosi is not dumb. Pelosi didn't get to be the second most powerful person in the U.S. by being dumb. As Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi has tremendous clout, and she uses it very effectively, unlike the last two Republican Speakers, John Boehner and Paul Ryan. Their own party ran them both out of Washington. That's because as leader of the House, Pelosi is the one individual who controls(legislation) what comes out of the House, she calls the shots and has the votes to pass legislation. President Trump can't get...

  • Vote

    Eddie Gillis|Nov 14, 2019

Election results from the October 12, 2019 election show that only 41% of eligible voters in Ouachita Parish voted. If you drill down further, you will see that 46% of eligible white voters and 33% of eligible black voters voted. A 46% turnout is not acceptable. Further, a 33% turnout is embarrassing. The 15th Amendment of the Constitution protects the rights of Americans to vote. But you know the stories. African Americans suffered intimidation, harassment, and physical violence (remember the...

  • Washington Keeping Carroll Focused

    Eddie Gillis|Nov 7, 2019

Alex Washington's first year as head coach of the Carroll High School Football Team Monroe LA was not by all standards a good one. Starting your first year off with a 2-8 record is not the stuff that people want to remember. But Washington and his staff were determined to put year one in the rear-view mirror and do things differently. The first thing that Washington and his staff did, was to get his team in the conditioning room and focus on keeping his players at peak optimum by going through...

  • Terrorist Death Won't Stop Impeachment

    Eddie Gillis|Oct 31, 2019

President Donald Trump will rightfully take the credit for the death of a noted terrorist who was recently killed when he reportedly committed suicide when surrounded by U.S. forces. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi killed himself and several family members during a U.S. raid that will be a victory in the war on terror, but he was no Osama bin Laden. That is not to minimize the impact of Baghdadi’s death, but victories like these don’t occur as often as the U.S. military would like them. There has been no more terrorist attacks in the U.S. since 9-11, whe...

  • Defunct Social Program Seeks New Life

    Eddie Gillis|Oct 31, 2019

The Extra Mile Region 8 was a social program designed to help those who are marginalized by society, having nowhere else to turn to when they needed help. The organization was funded through North East Delta, as it also had several other programs that were instrumental in helping to prevent people from slipping through the cracks such as homeless people who had no place to go. The biggest program that Extra Mile was involved, was Peer Support. This program not only had a hand in helping the homeless, but it reached out to those that had...

  • President's Taxes Fair Game

    Eddie Gillis|Nov 7, 2018

It appears that President Donald Trump has found himself between the proverbial “rock and a hard place”, now that a three judge panels of Appeals Court has ruled that his taxes/financial records must be turned over. State prosecutors in New York sued to have Trump’s accounting firm turn over his financials records dating back to 2011. The president had said more than three years ago that he “would love” to disclose his tax returns like all other modern-day presidents had done, except that he was under audit. The president has been playing t...

  • Coach Tattoo: Big Man Saving Kids

    Eddie Gillis|Oct 1, 2018

Community leaders come in all shapes, sizes and colors. What makes them stand apart is the heart inside of them for what they do, in order to make a difference in the community. Emmanuel Brown, Jr. is not the biggest or the tallest among leaders in the community. But what the short in stature man does with our at risk young Black boys, is the stuff of which legends are made. Affectionately known as Coach "Tattoo" in the Booker T. community, Brown is a very respected individual, especially by...

  • Sunday Alcohol Sales Ordinance Introduced

    Eddie Gillis|Oct 1, 2018

The Ouachita Parish Police Jury took an important step Monday (Oct. 1) night at its regularly scheduled meeting, when an ordinance to permit alcohol to be sold on Sunday was on the agenda. No action was taken by Jurors, as the ordinance was only for introductory purposes. Calhoun businessman, Laddie Aulakh went before members of the police jury last year asking why he couldn’t sell alcohol on Sunday. He told jurors that his business was losing money because his customers were not able to purchase alcohol on Sunday, as they went to surrounding p...

  • Separating Children is Not Biblical

    Eddie Gillis|Jun 21, 2018

U.S. Attorney General Jefferson Beauregard Sessions, III really put his foot in his mouth recently as he tried to defend President Trump’s immigration problem, by only making it worse. By now, the world is witnessing the kind of depths that conservative leaders are relying on to “Keep America safe” by locking up children who come across the border with their parents/guardians. President Trump has instituted a “zero tolerance” policy at the border with Mexico in an effort to keep out anyone that comes to this nation for valid reasons. No, they a...

  • I Am My Brother's Keeper

    Eddie Gillis|Jun 21, 2018

We all have a purpose in life to fulfill. Some people will try to persuade us to live the life that they believe we should live, but it is God who gives us a purpose to live, not only to worship/ serve Him, but to be a blessing to others. That was the kind of person that Joe Williams was to the residents that knew him in the Booker T community. He was well known as everyone knew Joe. He did odd jobs in the community, as he had a heart of gold, willing to do for others. Joe went home to be with...

  • Manning's 40 Years - Freedom's High Cost

    Eddie Gillis|Jun 21, 2018

Gerald Manning did what few of us could do, and still be able to walk, however, as of June 18, 2018, Manning is a free man. Manning spent forty long years in Angola, Louisiana's notorious prison for a crime that had injustice and racism written all over it. A young woman lost her life, and Manning was used as the scapegoat to make sure that justice was served. Now, forty years later, Manning is the only one who did not receive justice. The nightmare and miscarriage of justice for Manning began...

  • Monroe Transit Fix

    Eddie Gillis|Jun 21, 2018

There is a struggle for the soul of Monroe Transit between the city and the working men and women who drive and maintain the buses, as a line seemed to be drawn in the sand. At one time, the level of service by Monroe Tran- sit was good enough to earn a national award back in 2008. Now as we flash forward to 2018, a lot of questions are being asked about it, like how did the level of service in the mind of many riders, decrease? It is poor service from the drivers that greet daily riders, many of whom know their driver well? It is the condition...

  • From Geraldine McGee's Heart

    Eddie Gillis|Nov 9, 2017

It has been a long, hard and difficult year for Geraldine McGee. On Nov. 21, 2016 it will one year since McGee lost her daughter, Synkieva when she was killed by the man she was seeing, through an act of domestic violence. Quendron M. Bernard allegedly killed Synkieva because he was a jealous and controlling individual. When Synkieva realized what kind of relationship that she was involved in, Bernard was in the words of Ms. McGee, had become possessive, as he "wanted her" all for himself. "He w...

  • School Board Disappoints Public

    Eddie Gillis|Nov 9, 2017

The Monroe City School Board held a meeting last Wednesday evening (November 1) that may have caught many in the public off guard. That is because the vast majority of school board meetings are held on Tuesdays, which is common knowledge to the public. However, the meeting last Wednesday was attended by a small segment of the public, which led some to wonder why the change in meeting days. Wednesday is a night generally set aside for bible study at area churches, which probably meant that people would have had to make a choice of attending a...

  • Dead Church Shooting; What's next?

    Eddie Gillis|Nov 9, 2017

When fifty seven people died and hundreds injured at the hands of one individual in Las Vegas weeks ago, many in this “nation of guns”, just knew that our leaders in Washington would finally do something. Many thought(or believed), that our country’s leaders were going to say, “enough”, these killings have to stop. Or so they thought. After the usual “thoughts and prayers” sentiment expressed by our political leaders including President Trump, for a moment there seemed to be some momentum arising from the populace to do something about gun viol...

  • GSU Shooting Difficult for Academia

    Eddie Gillis|Nov 2, 2017

Grambling State University President Rick Gallot is in a difficult position following the recent shooting deaths of two men on the school's campus. As president of Grambling, many in the area see Gallot as being the best choice as a university leader for Grambling in a long time. Attendance is up at Grambling. It was homecoming weekend for the school, as everyone was in a festive mood. However, the shooting deaths of Earl Andrews and Monquiarious Caldwell, both 23 years old, changed all of...

  • Brown To Take Exam

    Eddie Gillis|Nov 2, 2017

Monroe Police Department Executive Officer Reggie Brown has won his legal challenge to take the upcoming Monroe Chief of Police exam next month. Brown’s challenge was held at the Safety Center on MLK Boulevard Tuesday afternoon. There was a discussion prior to the event, as members of the Monroe Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service Board and attorneys for Brown, got into a discussion as to whether the Board was having a hearing, or something else. That was because there appeared to be a misunderstanding, if the meeting was in fact, a hearing...

  • Trump's Bad Week

    Eddie Gillis|Nov 2, 2017

One bird has sung, and two more may be about to sing. If you worked on Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and had links to the Russian government, your time in the hot seat may be next. That has to be the sentiment of various individuals that have/had a direct/indirect contact with Trump, as Special Counsel Robert Mueller is showing the American people that he is not smoke and mirrors when it comes to doing his job. Mueller has brought federal charges against former campaign manager Paul Manafort and his Associate Rick Gates relating to a...

  • Club Nuvvo Loses Alcohol Renewal

    Eddie Gillis|Oct 26, 2017

Residents of Frances Towers and the community were out in full force Tuesday night at the Monroe City Council meeting to voice their strong disapproval to recent incidents in/around Club Nuvvo. The club located at 109 Catalpa Street had been the subject of recent city council meetings, where a spokesperson for Frances Towers Residents urged council members "to do something" because they were afraid that someone could get killed. At the last council meeting two weeks ago, Councilman Kenneth...

  • NAACP... School Board Unitary Status Unacceptable

    Eddie Gillis|Oct 26, 2017

A local civil rights group said that it could not support the Monroe City School Board as it seeks relief from federal oversight concerning a decades old desegregation lawsuit. The Monroe chapter of the NAACP held a Tuesday afternoon press conference, denouncing the school board's attempt to free itself from a federal lawsuit that literally looked as though it would never come to a satisfactory conclusion. The Consent Decree that has had jurisdiction over how the Monroe City System has gone...

  • Soldier Buried, Controversy Continues

    Eddie Gillis|Oct 26, 2017

What could have been settled with a simple apology, would have ended the nightmare that the family of Sgt. La David Johnson is currently experiencing. Sgt. Johnson was buried Saturday (Oct. 21) with honors, but the controversy over what led to his death/body recovery has not been answered by the Trump administration. The total unexplained deaths of Sgt. Johnson and three of his fellow soldiers in the nation of Niger, is turning uglier each day by a president who will not explain what went wrong. The world knows by now how President Trump...

  • Lack Of Respect For Black Soldier's Death

    Eddie Gillis|Oct 19, 2017

President Donald Trump must have thought that he came up with "a winner" when he invoked professional football players kneeling during the playing of the National Anthem, as a sign of disrespect to the flag. Colin Kaepernick started his one-man protest long before Trump became president. The facts should show that President Trump didn't say anything about Kaepernick's kneeling until just a few weeks ago. Where was the president's outrage over kneeling before then? Where was his passion for the...

  • Homeowner's Unsettled Repairs

    Eddie Gillis|Oct 19, 2017

A Ouachita Parish homeowner is still very upset with an area contractor who claims to do quality work on houses. The work quality has left the homeowner in strong disagreement with the contractor. However, what makes the homeowner even more infuriated with the person that she hired to work on her house is that individual is working on another house, leaving her home just the way it was when he stopped working on it. Robert McFarland started working/renovating a house near the ULM campus...

  • Anthem Protests Crossroads?

    Eddie Gillis|Oct 19, 2017

It looks like the protest by African-American football players in the NFL may be coming to an end. Soon. That is because Dallas Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones has all but issued an ultimatum to black players on the team, to either stand or not play. Jones, who knelt arm in arm with his players a couple of weeks ago in what we thought was a show of solidarity, just threw it out of the window, along with his players. Jones said that “this disrespect” of the flag must stop because he agrees wholeheartedly with President Trump, who advocated that pla...

  • New Road Economic Growth

    Eddie Gillis|Oct 19, 2017

I think that there is an old saying that goes, “if you build it, they will come”, or something like that. That is precisely what Dr. Ollibeth Reddix must have had in mind after her colleagues on the Ouachita Parish Police Jury passed a resolution that she sponsored to stimulate economic growth in eastern Ouachita Parish. During Monday night regularly scheduled meeting of the Police Jury, Dr. Reddix’s resolution would “support the submission” of a $250.000 grant application to the Delta Regional Authority to assist with the construct...

  • Police Shooting Family Grieves

    Eddie Gillis|Oct 12, 2017

The family of Marquinton Terral Brooks laid their beloved to rest Saturday( Oct. 8), as they are slowly coming to accept that Marquinton is no longer with them. A sheriff's deputy in western Ouachita parish killed Marquinton last Monday afternoon (Oct.2). According to media and law enforcements accounts, Marquinton and two other passengers were pulled over for a traffic stop. Deputies allege that Marquinton refused to comply with the deputy's orders, and tried to drive away. The report says...
